With Netflix reporting its first quarterly loss in a decade, many are looking to other streaming services like Hulu and HBO Max. Another contender, Disney Plus, isn’t very keen on slowing down its exclusive television series. Its programming includes Disney Channel’s original movies, shows, and programs from National Geographic and Marvel Studios. To add to their library of successful content, Disney Plus has developed plenty of Star Wars television series in “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett.” Their latest, Obi-Wan Kenobi will have Ewan McGregor reprise his role as the iconic Jedi master.
McGregor returns to the Star Wars franchise after his last appearance in 2005’s “Star Wars” Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.” Since then, McGregor has only provided voice cameos in the sequel trilogy by J.J. Abrams. According to McGregor’s 2019 interview with Men’s Journal, he has had to lie about the show’s development for four years.
“There’s a hunger for this character to come back,” McGregor said in footage screened exclusively for 2020’s Disney Investor Day. “The fans have been waiting long enough, you know?”
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a six-episode miniseries directed by Deborah Chow, who directed several episodes of The Mandalorian. Chow will be joined by showrunner Joby Harold and writer Hossein Amini.
The television series will follow Obi-Wan Kenobi between the end of the prequel trilogy and the start of the original trilogy. It will place Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was originally portrayed by the late Alec Guinness in the prequel series, ten years after Revenge of the Sith. After that climactic battle with Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan will be watching over Luke Skywalker on Tatooine.
The show will also feature appearances from previous Star Wars stars Hayden Christensen and Joel Edgerton, repeating their respective roles as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and Owen Lars. In Christensen’s case, his anticipated return also marks his first appearance as Anakin since Revenge of the Sith. The television series will again pit Anakin against Obi-Wan before their final battle in “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi is just one of the ten Star Wars exclusive series for Disney Plus that Disney Investor Day announced back in 2020. It is confirmed that Christensen will also appear in “Ahsoka” with Rosario Dawson. Dawson will be starring as Ahsoka Tano, which appeared in one episode of The Mandalorian.
