Cartoon Saloon is a well-known name in animation. It has earned a reputation alongside Pixar and Ghibli as a major player. The Irish animation house has always delivered, from the acclaimed The Breadwinner to the Irish Folklore trilogy, Song Of The Sea and The Secret Of Kells. The news about their next film is exciting. It’s called My Father’s Dragon and it’s available on Netflix. You can see the first image here. Have a look at the image above.
The Breadwinner’s Nora Twomey directs the film, which is based on Meg LeFauve’s screenplay for Captain Marvel and Inside Out. It was adapted from Ruth Stiles Gannett’s children’s book. Here’s the summary: Elmer, struggling to cope with a move to the city along with his mother, runs off to search for Wild Island and a young Dragon who is waiting to be saved. Elmer’s adventures take him to dangerous beasts, mysterious islands and the friendship of his life.
Netflix also revealed the extensive, sprawling voice cast, which is headed by Room’s Jacob Tremblay, and Stranger Things’ Gaten Matarazzo. They are joined by Dianne Wiest and Rita Moreno, Chris O’Dowd and Judy Greer, Alan Cumming and Yara Shahidi.
My Father’s Dragon has yet to be released, but we are hopeful that it will arrive before 2022. It would join Netflix’s impressive list, which includes animated features such as Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio and The Sea Beast. You should also check out Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood if it hasn’t been seen yet. It doesn’t matter what, it will be a joy whenever the Cartoon Saloon doors open again, taking us into another beautifully animated world.
